Matcha FAQs
The Nitty Gritty
-
Matcha offers a gentle, sustained boost of energy thanks to its unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine. Together, they promote calm focus and alertness — giving you steady energy without the crash that often comes with coffee.
Research by Sokary et al. (2023) suggests that the natural compounds in matcha — like caffeine, L-theanine, and catechins — can help ease stress and anxiety, while supporting focus, memory, and overall cognitive function, all without affecting mood.

Our matcha powder is so fine that it can be easily whisked with cold water or shaken on the go for a quick fix. When preparing matcha traditionally in a chawan with a bamboo whisk (chasen), water temperature plays an important role in unlocking its nutrients and flavour.
Traditionally, water of about 70°C is poured into the bowl, and the mixture is whisked until smooth and frothy. This temperature helps preserve matcha’s delicate compounds and antioxidant quality. However, research by Korn et al. (2024) found that infusions prepared at 90°C are actually the most abundant in bioactive compounds — including polyphenols and vitamin C — giving them an even higher antioxidant potential.

The bxb Matcha Ratio — 12oz Mottainai Cup
- 2 tsp matcha
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 tbsp sweetener (or to taste)
- 1 cup milk (we love Barista Oat)

Sift your matcha, add a little of your water to create a paste, then add in the rest of the water. Whisk. In your cup, mix sweetener with ice and milk, then pour your matcha on top.

Who
bread x butter was born from my own overwhelm — created to make space for rest, comfort, and softness in a busy world, inspired by nostalgia, slowing down, and matcha.
The brand celebrates the foundations — the simple, essential things we return to when we need grounding. The “bread and butter” moments that support us as we move toward our goals, in our own time.
I wanted bread x butter to feel nostalgic and comforting — something to hold onto when life feels busy, heavy, or overwhelming.
Meet Oliver
Oliver is the heart and face of our brand — a
symbol of nostalgia and ease. Like the teddy bears that once brought (and maybe still bring) us comfort, Oliver represents the same gentle feeling that a cup of matcha offers — familiar, calming, and grounding.
Our Farm
We’re proud to partner with a family-run tea farm in Wazuka, a small town in southern Kyoto, Japan — a region known as the heart of Uji tea. Our matcha is sourced directly from this farm, where every step — from harvest and processing to packaging — is carefully handled before being sent straight to us here in Brisbane, Australia. We proudly support their mission to preserve Japan’s tea traditions by making monthly donations back to the farm.
